Green Smoothie for Glowing Skin

Natural beauty truly comes from within.  That’s why it is so important to eat a healthy diet since what we put in our bodies not only impacts the inside of our body but also the outside, like our skin! Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables with antioxidants helps fight free radicals that are produced in the body (due to exposure to sun, exercise, damage to cell). Too many free radicals cause oxidative damage to healthy tissues and induces aging. For those who enjoy chemistry: Free radicals are an unpaired electron in orbit around the nucleus of an atom. In order to regain balance, antioxidants are able to neutralize free radicals and protect the cell from oxidation.  This is why it is so important to consume foods that are dense in nutrients and antioxidants.

green smoothie for beautyThis smoothie is not short of nutrients! Kale is a super food that contains so many nutrients such as calcium, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, manganese and so much more! Click on the vitamin/nutrient to see exactly what that nutrient does in the body OR go to vitamins/minerals under the Nutrition Resource tab at the top of the page. Kale is also rich in antioxidants, which give it that dark green color. Another benefit to kale is that it’s rich in fibre and will bind to bile salts, which lowers cholesterol and reduces the risk for heart disease.

Blueberries are one of the most antioxidant rich foods and make this smoothie taste delicious! Not only does it contain high levels of vitamin K, manganese and vitamin C but blueberries have been shown to lower the rick of cardiovascular disease. To see the amount of each nutrient in blueberries and more peer reviewed studies on the health benefits of blueberries read here.

Spirulina is blue-green algae that is a complete protein, meaning it contains all the essential amino acids. It also contains healthy fats such as omega-6 and omega 3. Another amazing benefit to spirulina is its high iron content. It’s also a great source of: manganese, magnesium, vitamin K, potassium and copper. I purchase this product from Organic Burst {everything is certified organic and pure} in the powder form (they also have tablet form). Spirulina gives this smoothie its rich green color.
