Nutrition Challenge of the Month: Eat Breakfast Every Morning

August 4, 2014 By Exploring Healthy Foods 1 Comment

NCOTMeatbreakfasteachmorningThe first Nutrition Challenge of the Month is to have breakfast every morning! Now I know this is something that a lot of people struggle with so I figured it would be a great challenge to kick off this new series!

Why is breakfast important?

Breakfast is definitely an important meal as it fuels your body after a long period of rest, essentially “breaking the fast”. It helps kick start your metabolism and digestive tract. Breakfast is extremely important for children as it helps development and learning capabilities. Skipping breakfast can cause headaches and leave you tired as you are not providing your body with sufficient energy. Skipping breakfast (or any meals!) does NOT help you lose weight. Chances are someone who skips breakfast will consume more at another meal, or have a tendency to snack on higher fat foods.

common reasons for not eating breakfast

These are very valid points, BUT there are so many ways to get around them. Here are my top tips to help you eat a healthy breakfast with very little time. Be sure to share these tips with your friends!

1. Prepare the night before.

-Have fruit cut up and ready to eat waiting for you in the fridge
-Set out a bowl, spoon, breakfast cereal and other non perishable items on the table the night before. This will help you remember to eat breakfast and everything you need will be right there waiting for you!
-If you enjoy smoothies in the morning, add all ingredients to plastic bag and keep it in fridge/freezer, that way in the morning all you have to do is dump the bag of ingredients into your blender!
-You could prepare your smoothie the night before, just make sure it is in an airtight container (mason jar, thermos). Fresh is always best but this is still a great way to get in nutrients in the morning.

2. Wake up 10 minutes earlier

Add time to your morning by waking up 10 minutes earlier to prepare and eat your breakfast!

3. Take your breakfast to go

-Fruit is literally fast-food. Bananas, apples, berries, and other fruits are so easy to eat on the go and require no preparation.
-If you have time to prepare breakfast, but no time to actually eat it, eat it along the way or when you get to work/school.

4. Keep foods in bag/purse at all times

-Keep foods like dried fruits, Lara bars, granola, nuts, or seeds in your bag or purse is a great alternative on those days you forget about breakfast. Resulting to fast food restaurants is not something you want to be doing in the morning therefore try to always have healthy alternative with you.

If you’re someone who rarely eats breakfast, start the challenge by eating breakfast at least every second day or 4 days out of the week. If you miss a breakfast one day, don’t worry!..try and prepare your breakfast for the following morning.

If you need more breakfast ideas, I will be posting a FREE 5 day 5-minute breakfast plan (view it here)! I also have some breakfast recipes here, and here (or check the recipe section at the top of my blog!).

Who’s joining this months challenge!? Let me know how your doing throughout the month!

[…] As the summer is coming to an end and many people going back to school or work, I wanted to share some really easy lunch ideas. I personally love eating wraps for lunch because they are easy to pack in your lunch bag and are very filling! With all of my recipes, I like to focus on making meals that are quick and easy. You will be able to pre make some of the items and portion them out for the week. The best thing to do when wanting to eat healthy is to PREPARE! Set a time every week to plan and prepare your meals.
