Pomegranates have a hard outer layer and edible seeds inside. This vibrant fruit is in season from about September till January. Pomegranates are picked at the peak of their ripeness so the pomegranates available in stores should be ripe. A ripe pomegranate should be a deep red colour, may have light streaks and no cracks.
Seeding a pomegranate
Simply cutting a pomegranate and removing the seeds can get a little messy. I find this method of removing the seeds the easiest way: Get a bowl of water and cut your pomegranate into 4 halves (be sure to cut off the ends of the pomegranate). Place the pomegranate half in the water and remove seeds from the membrane. The water helps remove the seeds and you will notice the seeds sink to the bottom of the bowl. The none edible membrane will floats and can easily be discarded. Drain seeds and enjoy!
Nutrition
Pomegranates are high in antioxidants and research is looking into its anti-inflammatory properties and anticarcinogenic effects.
