How to Unwind After an Evening Workout

July 25, 2017 By Exploring Healthy Foods 11 Comments

BLOG POST: HOW TO UNWIND AFTER AN EVENING WORKOUT! It can be hard to unwind after an intense spin class, workout session at the gym or after a game but I have got you covered! Simple tips to help relax your muscles and fall asleep! Featuring The Beam by Nimble Back. This product lays flat on your yoga mat (or can be used against a wall) and will help release tension in your back, shoulders and more! If you’re like me, the majority of your workouts happen in the evening. I love a good evening spin class but sometimes it can be a challenge winding down. The loud music and intense activity level normally leaves me feeling energized and pumped up after class. Whether you spin, play on a sports team or go to the gym in the evening, I am sure you know what I am talking about! So I wanted to share some of the things I do after class that help me relax and fall asleep! I would love to know in the comments what you do to wind down!

1.Post-Workout Snack

Replenish with a healthy post-workout snack! Since I am going to bed shortly after my workout, I keep my post-workout snack pretty light and simple. The amount of food post-workout will depend on your level of intensity and physical goal (increase lean muscle vs. muscle mass). A general guideline would be to incorporate a protein, carbohydrate and healthy fat.
Some of my favourite post-workout snacks before bed are:

  • 1 scoop of plant-based protein powder with approximately 1 cup of unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1/2-1 protein bar (I really like Cranked Energy Bars or Vega Bars)
  • AND loads of water before, during and after working out!

2.Light Yoga & Stretching using The Beam

Stretching is such an important part of your workout, as it will help you recover faster. I always like to dedicate at least 10 minutes to stretching post-workout. This past month, I have been using a product called The Beam, which is basically a long foam piece that you place on your yoga mat (or lean it against a wall). There are many videos available online using The Beam. I personally really like Yoga on The Beam as it stretches a variety of muscles and helps my mind unwind.
Although I mostly use this product post-workout, I also enjoy using it after a long day of sitting as it helps with my posture and releases tension in my shoulders.

It really is relaxing just laying on the beam with your eyes closed with some soothing rain sounds playing in the background. If that doesn’t make you want to fall asleep after a workout I don’t know what will?.

3.Warm Shower

Showers are always a must post-workout but BONUS, they will also help relax your muscles!

4.Diffusers and Room Sprays

Infusing the air in your bedroom with essential oils is a great way to unwind. I love my diffuser as it shuts off after a certain amount of time so you can fall asleep to the smell of your essential oil.
If I am not in the mood to use my diffuser, I love spraying my Tension Reducing Mist on my pillow before bed, which is super relaxing!

I LOVE these tips. I need all the unwinding lately, seriously, I’ve been so energized at night after teaching / working out and have really been struggling to get to bed on time which of course screws me up for the rest of the day. Thanks for this.
